Welcome to Watford Hindu Group

The foundations for this organisation were laid some 30 years ago with just a handful of our community members. The purpose was and still is to serve the Watford Hindu Community especially the Gujaratis, by offering our worthy but voluntary services to our people. Thus in 1973 shortly after arriving in Watford, under the guidance of my father and with the help of other families who had settled with us, we formed a small working group, promoting our religious, cultural and other social activities for the community

Our first occasion together was between four families when we braved to hire 4 taxis to celebrate the first Janmasti at the Hare Krishna Temple in Letchmore Heath in 1973.

From then on the families gathered regsularly at our house to celebrate the Navaratri festival. Our first Navaratri festival in a hall took place in 1975, when we hired the Methodist Church Hall costing £2.50 a night.

In 1978 our working group merged with another organisation which had been set up under the banner of Watford Manoranjan Group. As years passed by and as the Hindu Community membership increased considerably, we decided to change our Group's name to Watford Hindu Group and under the guidance of several of our community leaders, Mr Haribhagwan Joshi in particular and of course with your good support and co-operation, the group made a rapid progress and the membership has been increasing ever since.
